Final Report of the Commission for Reception, Truth and Reconciliation in East Timor (January 2006).
The Commission is an independent statutory authority that inquired into human rights violations committed on all sides, between April 1974 and October 1999. Home page of United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET). UNTAET had overall responsibility for the administration of East Timor from 25 October 1999 until it became an independent nation on 20 May 2002. This site, still maintained by the Peace and Security Section of the Department of Public Information in cooperation with the Department of Peacekeeping Operations, tracks current East Timor events, provides information on UN involvement, and is a point of access to official UN documents pertaining to UN responsibilities in East Timor.

Recently declassified documents from the National Security Archive confirm U.S. President Gerald Ford's and Secretary of State Henry Kissinger's foreknowledge of the Indonesian government's plan to invade Portuguese East Timor in 1975. These U.S. Government documents also indicate the context of U.S. policies
towards East Timor.

A major new report (9 Februrary 2006) to the Commission on Reception, Truth and Reconciliation by the Benetech Human Rights Data Analysis Group rigorously estimates the number of deaths resulting from the occupation of East Timor by units of the Indonesian armed forces.
