The Organization

Search for Common Ground (SFCG) is an international non-profit organization that promotes peaceful resolution of conflict. With headquarters in Washington, DC, and a European office in Brussels, Belgium, SFCG’s mission is to transform how individuals, organizations, and governments deal with conflict - away from adversarial approaches and toward cooperative solutions. SFCG seeks to help conflicting parties understand their differences and act on their commonalities.

With a total of approximately 350 staff worldwide, SFCG implements projects from 28 offices in 17 countries. SFCG’s programs are in Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, and the United States.  

Program

SFCG works in nine countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, including Angola, Burundi, Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and Rwanda. Media is a primary tool utilized by all the programs—radio, video, print, and drama. Each program is adapted to the specific context and conflict in its country, and all apply tools from SFCG’s toolbox.

SFCG launched its activities in the DRC in 2001. With offices and staff in Kinshasa and Bukavu, SFCG works with partners in all provinces of the country, and has sub-offices in Baraka, Uvira and Moba. These sub-offices give particular support to SFCG’s work to promote the peaceful repatriation of Congolese refugees from Tanzania, Burundi and Zambia. Activities in these areas include media production, training, participatory theatre and collaborative joint activities. This thematic focus is executed in close collaboration with the UNHCR Sub-Offices.

Summary of Position

The position will be responsible for all aspects of programmatic, financial and administrative coordination of the sub-office. Principle tasks will include coordinating information with other SFCG staff and partners, reporting weekly to supervisors, providing liaison activities and support to program supervisors, and monitoring and evaluation. The position also includes punctual programmatic initiatives such as facilitation, mediation, training and the organization of joint activities. The position holder will be supervised by the DRC Country Director and Deputy Director.

Responsibilities

  • Provide weekly updates on the context in the territory where the sub-office is located
  • Participate in meetings with partners, donor s, and local and international organizations working in the areas of repatriation, protection and conflict transformation
  • Report on SFCG activities on a weekly basis to partners, including compiling protection-related information
  • Liaise and support programmatic work by SFCG in the territory where the sub-office is located, notably in the area of media production, training, participatory theatre and joint activities. This is in collaboration with the program supervisors working out of the Bukavu office.
  • Coordinate joint activities for conflict transformation (youth, culture, and sports) in conjunction with local partners
  • Capacity-building of local partners, where appropriate
  • Support monitoring and evaluation work in collaboration with the lead Design, Monitoring and Evaluation Coordinator
  • Ensure sound administrative and financial processes and systems in the sub-office
  • Represent SFCG with donors, partners, and other stakeholders, as requested by the Country Director
  • Provide content material to the Africa Team for updating the websites, as well as for quarterly program updates, newsletters, and other SFCG literature

Minimum Qualifications

  • At least three years of work experience, preferably in conflict resolution, development, or media
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related area required
  • Experience in coordinating meetings and promoting dialogue, with facilitation and mediation skills as an advantage
  • Excellent coordination skills, interpersonal and networking skills, as well as the ability to conduct professional working relationships
  • Strong writing skills, including experience producing proposals, reports, and other informational documents
  • Experience and proven track record of successful fundraising and proposal writing
  • Experience working with donors and ability to manage multi-donor funding
  • Knowledge of major donor rules and regulations
  • Good understanding of budgeting and other financial procedures
  • Cross-cultural experience and sensitivity, and experience living and working in developing countries
  • Ability to work with people at all levels, ranging from high-level officials to community leaders
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Microsoft Excel
  • Professional-level competency in French and English, both orally and in writing
  • Experience working outside of country of origin
  • Strong ability to multi-task and work independently
  • Ability to work to strict deadlines, and coordinate and compile information from various sources
  • Willingness to regularly travel on short notice around the sub-region
  • Flexibility and good humor

Programme

Résumé du Poste

Regional Project Coordinator

Program

In addition to national-level programming, SFCG also implements regional strategies to address broader, cross-border issues, focusing on the Mano River Union +1 and the Great Lakes region.

Summary of Position

The Regional Project Coordinator will be responsible for managing regional projects in the Great Lakes and assisting with new initiatives under SFCG’s organic expansion. Specific tasks will include managing the regional project funded by the Belgian Cooperation, supporting the Great Lakes component of Africa-wide project supported by the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, assisting with start-up and fundraising of SFCG’s recently launched Rwanda program, and supporting the monitoring and evaluation component of SFCG’s projects in the region. Successful realization of responsibilities will require close collaboration with SFCG’s national programs in Burundi and DRC, as well as with the Africa Team. The position will be based in Bujumbura, Burundi, and will involve significant travel around the region. The position will be supervised by the Africa Director.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the implementation of the two-year regional project, which includes:
    • Monitoring activity implementation per the agreed first-year work plan, and ensuring adherence and/or adjustment as needed;
    • Assisting with the coordination of resources, logistics, and timing between the Burundi, DRC, and Rwanda programs;
    • Maintaining the overall picture of expenses against the budget, coordinating with the Burundi, DRC and Rwanda programs on country-based activity and operational spending;
    • Working with the Institutional Learning Team and the two DM&E Coordinators on monitoring and evaluation of project results;
    • Documenting activities and results for project reports, updates, web site postings, and other public information materials; and
    • Assisting with follow-through project proposal development, if appropriate.
  • Support the Project Manager for the Finnish Radio for Peace-building Project in the coordination of project implementation in Burundi and the DRC, which includes:
    • Working with the Country Directors in DRC and Burundi to develop two-year action plans for the implementation of the project;
    • Assisting with activity methodology development and implementation to ensure quality and maximum value;
    • Capturing results and success stories for project reports, updates, web site postings and other public information materials; and
    • Providing input to the continent-level activities such as the Radio for Peace-building Africa (RFPA) awards and website.
  • Support the development of the Rwanda country program, including:
    • Maintaining donor relations relevant to Rwanda, both in Kigali and the region;
    • Supporting administrative processes relevant to NGO registration, hiring, office set-up, and other start-up activities;
    • Contributing to proposal development, including context analysis, strategy development,  program design, and budget costing;
    • Managing Rwanda project activities during the start-up period, until the program has raised a budget sufficient for hiring a dedicated Country Director.
  • Coordinate project monitoring and evaluation activities for the joint SFCG/Media Focus on Africa project in Kenya, if funding is approved
  • Work with the Africa Team on other regional assignments as needed
