Federal Election Strategy Manager

With a federal election on the horizon, Stand Canada is seeking an enthusiastic and self-motivated individual to serve as its election strategy manager.

During the 2008 election, Stand ran a campaign called “Speak the Name”. Candidates who promised to take action for Darfur were rewarded with Stand members as campaign volunteers, and publicity through Stand’s website and other channels. Now we are keen to learn from our past experience and move forward with continued successful initiatives.

Stand’s new Events Team will be working on an election-related event. The election strategy manager will coordinate with this team, but will be focused on activities that are national in scope. Ideas might include letter-writing drives, Web-based viral campaigns, volunteer drives, media outreach etc.

Responsibilities

  • Meet with past election strategy managers to discuss past successes and challenges, and to devise a strategy for future elections
  • Commitment to lead on this project before and during the next federal election, and to follow-up with an evaluation when the election is over
  • Coordinate campaigns and delegate tasks
  • Meet or conference call with Stand directors, ally organizations etc.

Policy Researcher (Stand National Policy Team)

Position: Policy Researcher

Organization: Stand (National Policy Team)

Supervisor: Policy Director – Lukas Kujawa

Compensation: Volunteer Position

Time: 3-5 hours per week

Experience/Qualifications:

Preference will be given to graduate students as well as undergraduate students in their 3rd or 4th year of their B.A. They should be familiar with the Canadian political system and have a reasonable understanding of the Darfur conflict in the greater Sudan context. They should either come from Stand, be involved in a similar organization or have independently followed the Darfur/Sudan situation. Research methods are particularly important as the individual should know how to conduct research by themselves (with minimal guidance) and make the appropriate citations. This is a great opportunity for someone who has an above average understanding of Darfur/Sudan to gain a more in depth knowledge of the conflict and how the Canadian political process works.

Qualities:

  • Reliable – can work under monthly deadlines
  • Independent - requires minimal supervision, able to work alone
  • Interested and has experience with research/policy
  • Good Writing Skills

Stand Canada is a virtual, not-for-profit organization that strives to make it easy to act against genocide by creating simple and effective ways for Canadians to take action. Our primary goal is to make stopping genocide a cornerstone of Canadian foreign policy, starting with the Darfur region of Sudan.

Policy Director
Stand Canada is renowned as a source of balanced, specific and realistic policy recommendations regarding Canada’s involvement in Darfur. The Policy Director is responsible for ensuring that the organization maintains its high standard of policy expertise. The bulk of the Director’s work involves organizing and leading a monthly conference call with the Advocacy Steering Committee—a group of Stand leaders with expertise in the policy realm.

Responsibilities

  • Stay up-to-date on the situation in Darfur and relevant policy developments in Canada
  • Arrange and lead a monthly conference call with the advocacy steering committee to update Stand’s policy recommendations and identify research needs
  • Ensure that members are prepared for the call by circulating research briefs, relevant articles, etc.
  • Take meeting minutes and send to team within 48 hours of the conference call
  • In consult with team, update Stand’s policy recommendations each month
  • In consult with team, develop list of Stand's research needs each month and provides to Digest team
  • Answer (along with Advocacy Director) policy questions directed to Stand
  • Write occasional policy-related blog posts, editorials, etc.

  • A background in policy analysis, political science or international affairs is an asset
  • Good background knowledge of the crisis in Darfur, Sudanese history or African politics is an asset

Darfur Digest Writers

Stand Canada’s Darfur Digest is currently seeking people interested in international law, conflict analysis, research, and advocacy to join our team as analyst writers.

The Digest is a monthly report which contains analysis on current events relevant to the crisis in Darfur and offers a unique Canadian perspective. It chronicles developments in four areas:

  • The Security Situation
  • The Humanitarian Situation
  • The AU and UN
  • Canadian politics.

Responsibilities

  • 12 month commitment to work with a team member for your section to produce 1 article each month
  • Production of a 1-2 page article on developments in Darfur within the assigned field (The Security Situation; The Humanitarian Situation; The AU and UN; and Canadian Politics), submitted to supervisors one week before the end of the month
  • Willingness to keep up to date with news about Darfur
  • Availability for periodic conference calls and online chats to coordinate Digest production

Call for applications – Intern for the All-Party Group for the Prevention of Genocide

Organizational background

The All-Party Parliamentary Group for the Prevention of Genocide and Other Crimes Against Humanity is a group of Parliamentarians from all parties in the House of Commons and the Senate who have a common interest in the prevention of genocide and crimes against humanity. Its mandate is to improve Canada's efforts to prevent genocide and crimes against humanity, to increase the flow of information available to Parliamentarians on these and related matters, and to communicate and collaborate with like minded organizations both domestically and internationally. To ensure impartiality, the Group's executive is composed of one vice-chair person from each political party at Parliament and a chair person elected by its membership.

Internship background

The internship program is administered by the Montreal Institute for Genocide and Human Rights Studies (MIGS) at Concordia University and is supported financially by the Aegis Trust, an international genocide prevention charity.

Position description

Under the supervision of the Chair and with support from staff in the offices of Group members, the intern will be responsible for the daily administration of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for the Prevention of Genocide and Other Crimes Against Humanity (APPG) as well as the organization of special events as they are planned by the Group's Executive. In addition, the intern will serve as a conduit for information, receiving news from both the media and civil society organizations and packaging it for distribution to Group members.

Specific responsibilities

·         General correspondence and communications;

·         Financial administration (tracking expenses and income);

·         Membership services (maintaining a current membership list, responding to questions about the group);

·         Meeting preparation and follow up (arranging the logistics, agenda and documentation for Executive and Group meetings; the taking of minutes and follow-up on action items);

·         Special event organization (preparation for special events, such as consultations with civil society groups, including identifying potential presenters, logistical arrangements, the sending of invitations, the tracking of RSVPs, and the drafting of needed documentation);

·         News surveillance (gathering information on situations of concern or potential concern and distributing it to members);

·         Relationship building (networking with civil society organizations and other partners to ensure the Group receives up to date information on situations of concern) .

Qualifications

The preferred candidate would:

·         Have recently completed or be enrolled in a graduate program in a related discipline;

·         Be fluent in both English and French;

·         Have very well developed communication and writing skills;

·         Work well in a team environment;

·         Be self-starting, able to work without continual supervision;

·         Be able to prioritize tasks and delegate effectively;

·         Have a knowledge of international law and current issues in international affairs;

Hours and salary

The intern will work an average of 15 hours per week at the rate of CDN $20 / hour, translating to a salary of CDN $9350 over the term from January to August.

Contexte du poste

Le programme d'interna est administré par le Montreal Institute for Genocide and Human Rights Studies (MIGS) de l'Université Concordia, appuyé financièrement par l'Aegis Trust, organisme caritatif international de prévention du génocide.

Description du poste

Sous la supervision du président et avec l'appui du personnel et des bureaux des membres du Groupe parlementaire multipartite pour la prévention du génocide et d'autres crimes contre l'humanité, l'interne est chargé de l'administration quotidienne du Groupe et de l'organisation des événements spéciaux planifiés par son comité directeur. En outre, il transmet l'information, reçoit les nouvelles des médias et des organisations de la société civile et les distribue aux membres du groupe.

Responsabilités particulières

·         Correspondance et communications générales;

·         Administration financière (suivi des dépenses et des recettes);

·         Services aux membres (tenue à jour de la liste des membres, réponse aux questions sur le Groupe);

·         Préparation et suivi des réunions (logistique, ordre du jour et documentation des réunions du comité directeur et du Groupe; prise de notes aux réunions et suivi sur interventions convenues);

Compétences

Le candidat idéal :

·         A terminé récemment un programme universitaire de niveau supérieur dans une discipline pertinente, o u y est inscrit;

·         Est compétent en français et en anglais;

·         A des compétences très développées en communication et en rédaction;

·         Travaille bien en équipe;

·         Est autonome, peut travailler sans surveillance constante et prend re des initiatives;

·         Est capable de prioriser ses tâches et de déléguer efficacement;

Horaire et salaire

Life Stories Project Now Accepting Applications for 2009 Internships

Dear Madam / Dear Sir,

The Life Stories of Montrealers Displaced by War, Genocide and other Human
Rights Violations Project is looking for student interns to carry out a
variety functions, based out of Concordia University's Centre for Oral
History and Digital Storytelling.

These internships provide university and CEGEP students with opportunities
to gain practical research, technical and communications experience in a
vibrant, multilingual and intercultural environment.  Supervision is
provided by the Life Stories project. Arrangements can be made on an
individual basis, according to the demands of students' programs of study.

Applications are due Monday, December 29.

The project, which will run for a period of five years, brings together
researchers from Concordia, McGill, UQÀM, and UdeM, as well as 18 Montreal
community partners active in the fields of culture, human rights, art and
education. The aim of this project is to explore the experiences and
memories of immigrants to Montreal who have survived war and mass
violence, ranging from the Holocaust, to the Rwandan and Cambodian
genocides, and human rights abuses committed in Haiti, South Asia and
Latin America.
