2011 Internship Opportunity with the Will to Intervene Project
The Montreal Institute for Genocide and Human Rights Studies, Concordia University, is currently accepting applications for a graduate level internship with the Will to Intervene Project.
The Will to Intervene Project is a crucial initiative developed jointly by General Roméo Dallaire and Dr. Frank Chalk of the Montreal Institute for Genocide and Human Rights Studies (MIGS) that is spearheading the fight against genocide by building domestic political will in Canada and the United States to prevent future mass atrocities. W2I's ground-breaking 2009 policy report, Mobilizing The Will To Intervene: Leadership and Action to Prevent Mass Atrocities, contains concrete policy recommendations for the governments of Canada and of the United States, as well as recommendations for journalists and civil society groups, which will advance this goal. It details the long term consequences to Canadian and American security, public health and prosperity that result from mass atrocities, which make engaging in the prevention of such atrocities in each county's national interest.
Responsibilities
- Assist the Lead Researcher with research and writing on genocide prevention; creating Powerpoint presentations; writing grant applications.
- Assist in the organising of a major conference on the Responsibility to Protect and the media to be held in Montreal on 20 – 21 October.
Requirements
- Recently finished or enrolled in Graduate Studies in Political Science, Journalism, or related field.
- In-depth knowledge of international affairs, preferably knowledge of genocide prevention and the Responsibility to Protect
- Excellent command of written and spoken English. Fluency in French will be considered a definite asset.
- Experience of working on Powerpoint presentations.
- Some experience in organising large scale conferences.
- Able to dedicate at least 10 - 15 hours a week beginning early September until early November 2011.

Call for Interns: Media Monitoring Project (various countries)
The Montreal Institute for Genocide and Human Rights Studies, Concordia University, is currently accepting applications for internships as Country Desk Officers with its Media Monitoring Project.
The Media Monitoring Project is intended to provide early warning of genocide, crimes against humanity, ethnic cleansing, and serious war crimes, while informing the international community about what government media in the countries covered are communicating to their own citizens in their own languages. The project is currently undergoing major development, which will include more focus on analysis and commentary, together with weekly summaries of domestic media reports.
Responsibilities
- Researching government-owned and privately-owned domestic media outlets in an assigned country using MIGS’ BBC Monitoring subscription and the Internet.
- Writing weekly reports summarizing and comparing news items in the government and private media of that country.
- Writing and keeping current a concise report on risk factors in their country for posting on the MIGS’ website based on the contents of their weekly reports.
Requirements
- Excellent research and English writing skills
- Ability to work autonomously and stick to weekly reporting deadlines
- At least a completed BA. (or final year status) in political science, history, sociology, geography, communications, journalism or a related field.
- Fluency in other languages is considered an asset.
All Media Monitoring interns are credited as Country Desk Officers on the MIGS web site, receive brief training and are expected to carry out their responsibilities from home (interns do not necessarily need to be based in Montreal). MIGS expects interns to dedicate at least 5 to 6 hours a week to their internship. Please note that this is a non-remunerated internship.
