On April 5, MIGS Director Frank Chalk met with the staff of the UN Office of the Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide in New York.

On April 19, W2I Senior Deputy Director, Kyle Matthews, and MIGS Director, Frank Chalk participated in the review of the project report “Standards for the Application of the Responsibility to Protect” prepared by the Cardozo School of Law at Yeshiva University.

On April 23, President Obama announced new steps taken by his Administration to prevent mass atrocity crimes through the creation of a Mass Atrocities Prevention Board. The W2I Project issued a press release to welcome the move.

On 25 April, the All-Party Parliamentary Group for the Prevention of Genocide and Other Crimes Against Humanity (MIGS’ institutional partner) held an event to mark the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Mass Atrocities. The panel discussion featured Dr Francis Deng, the United Nations Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide, Dr Lloyd Axworthy, President of the University of Winnipeg, Dr Payam Akhavan, Faculty of Law, McGill University and the Group’s Chair, Senator Roméo Dallaire.

On April 30, Kyle Matthews, Frank Chalk and Senator Roméo Dallaire co-authored an op-ed in the Ottawa Citizen asking “Where is Canada’s atrocity prevention board?”

The City of Toronto passed a proclamation in support of the W2I Project, designating 10 May as “Will to Intervene” Day. An event featuring former Liberal MP Martha Hall Findlay, journalist and commentator Tarek Fatah, the President of Canadian Lawyers for International Human Rights, Jillian Siskind, and W2I staff took place to mark the day at Trinity College, the University of Toronto. The event was organised jointly by MIGS and the Canadian Centre for the Responsibility to Protect. View Concordia University’s press release.

On May 9, MIGS’ Senior Fellow, Senator Roméo Dallaire delivered a speech to the Canadian Senate on the prevention and elimination of mass atrocities. He impressed upon Canadian Senators that the United States is moving forward with recommendations advanced by the Will to Intervene Project and that Ottawa should follow suit.

On May 10, Senator Art Eggleton also presented to the Senate. He asked that Canada implement the strategic recommendations outlined in the W2I study and follow the leadership of President Obama.
