MIGS / Genocide Prevention Group Parliamentary Intern
Term: summer 2011 to summer 2012 (approx. 1 year)
Organizational background:
The All-Party Parliamentary Group for the Prevention of Genocide and Other Crimes Against Humanity (Genocide Prevention Group) is a group of Parliamentarians from all parties in the House of Commons and the Senate who have a common interest in the prevention of genocide and crimes against humanity. Its mandate is to improve Canada’s efforts to prevent genocide and crimes against humanity, to increase the flow of information available to Parliamentarians on these and related matters, and to communicate and collaborate with like-minded organizations both domestically and internationally. To ensure impartiality, the Group’s executive is composed of one Vice-Chair from each political party in Parliament and a Chair elected by its membership.
Position description:
Under the supervision of the Chair and with support from staff in the offices of Group members as well as from staff at the Montreal Institute for Genocide and Human Rights Studies, the intern will be responsible for the daily administration of the Genocide Prevention Group as well as the organization of special events as they are planned by the Group’s Executive. In addition, the intern will serve as a conduit for information, receiving news from both the media and civil society organizations, and packaging it for distribution to Group members.
Specific responsibilities:
• General office correspondence and communications;
• Financial administration (tracking expenses and income and managing a budget);
• Membership services (maintaining a current membership list, responding to questions about the group);
• Fundraising;
• Meeting preparation and follow up (arranging the logistics, agenda and documentation for
Executive and Group meetings; taking minutes and following up on action items);
• Special event organization on mass atrocity crimes (preparation for special events, such as consulting with civil society groups and identifying potential presenters, making logistical arrangements, sending invitations, tracking RSVPs, and drafting documentation and policy briefings);
• News surveillance and monitoring on mass atrocity crimes (gathering information on situations of concern or potential concern and distributing it to members);
• Report and press release preparation on mass atrocity crimes (researching, drafting, editing and disseminating text to members and civil society contacts);
• Relationship building (networking with civil society organizations and other partners to ensure the Genocide Prevention Group receives up-to-date information on situations of concern);
• Website updating and maintenance of other social media outlets; and
• Manage volunteers’ tasks and coordinate computer schedules.
Qualifications
The preferred candidate would:
• Have recently completed or be enrolled in a graduate program in a related discipline;
• Be fluent in both English and French;
• Have experience fundraising;
• Have very well-developed communication and writing skills;
• Have strong research skills;
• Be able to work in a professional and impartial manner;
• Have experience working on Parliament Hill;
• Work well in a team environment;
• Be self-starting, able to work without continual supervision;
• Have a proven track record of working in a leadership position, or be able to demonstrate leadership qualities;
• Be able to prioritize tasks and delegate effectively;
• Be able to manage a budget; and
• Have knowledge of international law and current issues in international affairs.
Hours and salary:
• The intern will work an average of 15 hours per week at a salary of $20 per hour ($1,300 per month).

Le Groupe parlementaire multipartite pour la prévention du génocide et d’autres crimes contre l’humanité (Groupe pour la prévention du génocide) réunit des parlementaires de toutes allégeances de la Chambre des communes et du Sénat, intéressés à prévenir les génocides et autres crimes contre l’humanité. Son mandat vise l’amélioration des efforts du Canada pour prévenir les génocides et les crimes contre l'humanité, l’apport accru d’information destinée aux parlementaires sur ces sujets et les sujets connexes ainsi que la communication et la collaboration avec des organismes ayant les mêmes objectifs, tant au niveau national qu’international. Pour demeurer impartial, le Groupe s’est doté d’un comité exécutif dont les vice présidents représentent chacun des partis politiques de la Chambre et le président est élu par les membres.
Description du poste:
Sous la supervision du président et avec l’appui du personnel des bureaux des membres du Groupe parlementaire multipartite, ainsi que du personnel de l’institut montréalais d’études sur le génocide et les droits de la personne, pour la prévention du génocide et d’autres crimes contre l’humanité, le stagiaire est chargé de l’administration quotidienne du Groupe et de l’organisation des événements spéciaux planifiés par son comité exécutif. En outre, le titulaire transmet l’information, reçoit les nouvelles des médias et des organisations de la société civile et les distribue aux membres du groupe.
Responsabilités particulières:
• Correspondance et communications générales de bureau;
• Administration financière (suivi des dépenses et des recettes et gestion d’un budget);
• Service aux membres (tenue à jour de la liste des membres, réponse aux questions sur le Groupe);
• Collecte de fonds;
• Préparation et suivi des réunions (logistique, ordre du jour et documentation des réunions du comité directeur et du Groupe; prise de notes aux réunions et suivi sur interventions convenues);
• Organisation des événements spéciaux à propos du génocide et des crimes contre l’humanité (préparation à des événements spéciaux tels que des consultations avec des groupes de la société civile et le repérage de présentateurs éventuels, organisation matérielle, envoi d’invitations, consignation des réponses, rédaction de documents et d’informations stratégiques);
• Suivi de l’actualité au sujet de génocide et de crimes contre l’humanité (recueil de l’information sur des situations inquiétantes ou qui pourraient le devenir et distribution aux membres);
• Préparation de rapports et de communiqués de presse au sujet de génocide et de crimes contre l’humanité (recherche, rédaction, révision et distribution de textes aux membres et aux contacts de la société civile);
• Développement des relations (réseautage avec les organisations de la société civile et autres partenaires afin que le Groupe pour la prévention du génocide reçoive l’information à jour sur les situations inquiétantes);
• Mise à jour et maintenance du site Web et d'autres médias sociaux;
• Gestion des activités des bénévoles et coordination de la programmation informatique.
Compétences
Le candidat idéal :
• A récemment terminé un programme universitaire de niveau supérieur dans une discipline pertinente, ou y est inscrit;
• Est compétent en français et en anglais;
• Possède de l’expérience dans la collecte de fonds;
• A des compétences très développées en communication et en rédaction;
• A des compétences développées en recherche;
• Fait preuve de professionnalisme et d’impartialité;
• Possède une expérience de travail au Parlement;
• Travaille bien en équipe;
• Est autonome, peut travailler sans surveillance constante et prend des initiatives;
• Possède de l’expérience dans une position de leadership ou peut démontrer ses qualités de leader;
• Est capable d’établir la priorité de ses tâches et de déléguer efficacement;
• Est capable de gérer un budget;
• Possède une certaine connaissance du droit international et des dossiers courants des affaires internationales.
Horaire et salaire:
• Le stagiaire travaille en moyenne de 15 heures/semaine au salaire de $20 par l’heure (1 300 $ par mois).

Federal Election Strategy Manager
With a federal election on the horizon, Stand Canada is seeking an enthusiastic and self-motivated individual to serve as its election strategy manager.
During the 2008 election, Stand ran a campaign called “Speak the Name”. Candidates who promised to take action for Darfur were rewarded with Stand members as campaign volunteers, and publicity through Stand’s website and other channels. Now we are keen to learn from our past experience and move forward with continued successful initiatives.
Stand’s new Events Team will be working on an election-related event. The election strategy manager will coordinate with this team, but will be focused on activities that are national in scope. Ideas might include letter-writing drives, Web-based viral campaigns, volunteer drives, media outreach etc.
Responsibilities

Meet with past election strategy managers to discuss past successes and challenges, and to devise a strategy for future elections

Commitment to lead on this project before and during the next federal election, and to follow-up with an evaluation when the election is over

Coordinate campaigns and delegate tasks

Meet or conference call with Stand directors, ally organizations etc.

Darfur Digest Writers
Stand Canada’s Darfur Digest is currently seeking people interested in international law, conflict analysis, research, and advocacy to join our team as analyst writers.
The Digest is a monthly report which contains analysis on current events relevant to the crisis in Darfur and offers a unique Canadian perspective. It chronicles developments in four areas:
